Cantina di Gerardo - St. Johnsbury, VT

If the last time you had a great Italian meal was in the North End of Boston, you need to visit Cantina di Gerardo’s, located right in the heart of downtown St. Johnsbury. Although the restaurant offers some of the best, authentic Italian food north of Fenway Park, that is not the only reason diners come back to Gerardo’s.

Gerardo’s is quite literally a family restaurant, with three generations helping to run the restaurant (including the owners’ adorable little granddaughter). One diner remarked that going to Gerardo’s feels like you are coming home, replete with all the smells that draw you into the restaurant from the street, the aroma of homemade sauces and pizzas wafting out into the downtown. As you might expect from a chef who has been cooking since he was a boy, the restaurant offers the freshest ingredients in its extensive selection of items, all made to order.

The restaurant fare is considered southern Italian or Neapolitan cuisine, so you will find a wide variety of panino caldo (hot sandwiches), panino freddo (cold sandwiches), pasta styles, pizzas and calzones, featuring meats and fish the chef selects himself. The restaurant also offers a full bar and a nice selection of exclusively Italian wines to accompany your meal.

You will not go away hungry at Cantina di Gerardo’s. Owners Devorahe and Gerardo Grieco pride themselves on all of their dishes having large portions. Don’t forget to check out the “Features of the Day” board when you get to the restaurant, as you will find some very delicious dishes that are not on the menu.
