“Once you have support, that's when change starts to happen...”

“…You can feel that in Joshua House… that feeling of support can be life-changing.”

Joshua House Warming Shelter was the sponsor of September's Coffee & Connections in Newport. Hosted by the NEK Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Vermont's North Country Chamber of Commerce.

This month’s Newport edition of Coffee & Connections featured local organization, Joshua House Warming Shelter (JHWS), which offers a bridge to services for individuals experiencing long-term homelessness.

First opening January 31st of 2026, their organization was able to provide 32 nights of shelter and 300+ meals during Vermont’s harsh winter. It was a huge success, but as costs continue to rise, the need is only going up.

“...So many people in the community are on the brink: one pay check, one sick day away from losing their house… these things compound over and over again.”

They’re currently looking to hire Overnight Shelter Attendants to begin training ahead of the colder months.

Their services wouldn’t be possible without the support of their volunteer network, who help to keep the shelter clean, donate meals, and many other services.

A morning of connections

As we learned about JHWS that morning, we explored the question: how do we get connected with the partners and resources that help move good work forward?

As the morning continued, we saw those very connections being made in real-time. Ideas and business cards alike were being shared among business leaders and community members who all want what’s best for our Northeast Kingdom. In that way, it really is remarkable, the power of coming together to share coffee and company. It’s where great things begin and where they grow.

If you couldn’t make it this month, we hope you’ll consider joining us next time.

We’re in Lyndonville the first Wednesday of each month, and Newport the third Wednesday of each month. Of course, we’re always looking to connect. Reach out to us anytime to let us know what connections you need to make to move your great idea forward.

Coffee & Connections is one of our favorite recurring events. Join us the first Wednesday of each month in Lyndon, and now, the third Wednesday of each month in Newport (in partnership with VT's North Country Chamber of Commerce). Check our calendar for upcoming dates and themes, and to discover even more great events!
